This pendant was cast from a 1970s West German made St Christoper medal. The original piece was made from "pot metal", a term used to describe non-precious and non-iron containing metals that came from scraps thrown into the "pot". They were then later melted down to be cast into objects for the motoring industry some 100+ years ago. Pot metal isn't something you want to wear on your skin, so having a mould made and casting this piece in precious metal gives it a new life; allowing people who can wear sterling silver or 9ct gold to wear it against their skin.
The piece was cast in Melbourne using the lost wax method and hand finished in my Otway forest studio. This medal is large, has a fabulous hefty weight to it and has a blank cartouche shield on the back that could be engraved by a professional engraver. Along with the blank cartouche shield, the medal has German text GUTE FAHRT, translating to good ride/good trip. St Christopher is the patron saint of travellers and is said to protect folks on their travels.
Materials: recycled sterling silver or 9ct yellow gold. Sterling silver is ready to ship, 9ct gold pieces are made to order and ship in 2-3 weeks.
Measurement: 3cm in diameter, excluding the jump ring.
This listing is for the pendant medal ONLY. If you order this piece you will not receive a chain unless you add one to your cart. Pictured on a 60cm long handmade Trombone link necklace chain.
The original piece that I used to make the mould is pictured in the last image.
Hand finished in Betsy Blonde's Otway forest based studio on Gadubanud Country.
